Multidisciplinary care is key for the
management of SMA1

There are many key roles in the care of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)1

SMA is a complex, lifelong disorder involving different aspects of care and healthcare professionals along the way. Today, management guidelines recommend a multidisciplinary approach for those living with SMA.

Each specialist, including primary care physicians, should have regular, ongoing communications with the treating neurologist, who generally coordinates care since they are most aware of the disease course and potential issues. See below for a few types of specialists that may be involved in SMA care.

“Ashley saw a team of specialists: cardiologists, pulmonologists, nutritionists,
physical and occupational therapists, a social worker, and a case manager.”

It’s important to treat SMA as soon as possible.2
